Safe Water Save Lives

Goal

To reduce exposure to disease through the improvement of access to water and healthier sanitation practices.

Situation

Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses. In Sindh alone, people spend 1000’s of hours every year just walking for water. Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, walking miles to the nearest source, which is unprotected and likely to make them sick.

Strategic Objectives

To facilitate the improvement of access to sanitized water.
Communities lead and participate in processes to eradicate open defecation in their villages.
Empowerment of communities and village structure for sustainable and healthy management of water supplies.

Overview

The Community Based Health Program is being implemented in various areas of Sindh and is one of the components of that program focuses on the direct relationship between community health, hygiene, local sanitation facilities and the availability of a clean water supply.

Impact

17,000 people have safe clean drinking water.
Fresh clean water for cooking & washing is being used resulting in lower outbreaks of disease.
Women and children no longer have to travel miles for the water. Women thus are much less prone to attacks and children induction into school has steadily risen.
